The Taj Ma Tea House

 

Further transforming the backyard into a little Japanese oasis required an upgrade of the pergola. The old pergola was looking a bit sad and Jenny was jealous of me having the mens shed and nothing in the garden for her so the tea house idea came to fruition. Essentially an extension to the pergola allowing Jenny to sit out and read or nap the afternoons away. Little did I know that it would take an eternity to make.

The Pergola: A friend said do you want it so re-erected it in our backyard. However could only salvage half of the timber the roof and the other half was new.

Construction Phase

We nearly pulled the old pergola down to erect a larger space with old bridge timbers as posts etc. with a new raised timber floor. A very big, expensive project. Decided on the tea house extension.

                  

                          

Windows

The timber of choice for the windows was Blackbutt. BB is a very bloody hard and bloody brittle material that is extremely hard to work with. It is tough and temperamental so it took a long time to make the window frames. Blackbutt was chosen because it is a light coloured timber and is also weather resistant.

All done bar some furniture, a little lantern and a paint touch up. Final pic to come in a later installment.
