The Chalk King of Canada
Em n Kez have guilted me into doing a blog with all their blogs so full of interesting life happenings so I'll put in a quick one. This is about my infamy as a side walk chalk artist. Last year, whilst at the cottage I witnessed what is a tradition in a lot of Canadian families when the kids are bored and the sun is shining. Sidewalk chalk drawing is very popular, especially amongst the Dietrich families. Basically the kids get into a box of sidewalk chalks and just draw and scribble all over the pavements. The chalk will stay there until the next rain where it is washed away ready for some more scribbling. Sidewalk chalk is different to blackboard chalk. The sticks are much bigger and seem to be softer and more powdery than blackboard chalk. PS: the Crayon brand chalks pictured are the more expensive brand. Dollarama sell sidewalk chalk for $2 for a pack with limited colours which is generally what is available.
All of the other adults (wisely) say they can't draw so when I was asked to draw something I googled each Childs requests and came up with a bunch of characters including dinosoars, unicorns, kangaroos, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Spiderman, Catwoman and others. I made all the Canadian kids (only the older ones: Ari-10 and Logan-9) to pronounce chalk properly before I would do more drawings. It was very funny with all the Canadians trying to say 'chorrk' rather than 'Chaaak'.
Unfortunately, I don't have any pics of the Cottage chalking but here is the chalk drawings we did in the front driveway at Alex and Cody's in Old Orchard Place.
