Komodo SwimTrek 2019

Second SwimTrek, this time to Indonesia. Flew out on Friday morning with stay over in Bali. Flight to Labuan Bajo meeting the other guys and the tour guides. Transferred to the boat in warm and humid conditions. Lovely to be out of the cold weather.
Arrived at Denpasar Airport

Our boat: MY Oceanic

Relaxing on the top deck

Front deck looking out over the Komodo National Park

The weeks weather, nice!
Saturday 8th: Bidadari
Boarded the boat then sailed to a quiet spot for a 400m swim to ascertain groups. Jenny got to go into the pink fast group, I was in the yellow middle with slower swimmers in an orange group. Then lunch on-board before a 1.5km first swim. Swam into a cave that had bats flying around!!! Beers, gin and wine at happy hour on the front deck before dinner. Had a Japanese style dinner with Miso and Sushimi. Cards after for those not too tired. Everyone but the card players were in bed before 8:30.
Swim briefing

Sunday 9th: Sabita(swim) Siaba Kecil(snorkel) Siaba Besar(swim)
Today was our first big swim. Jenny and I both swam the furthest we have ever swum, 3.7km. Saw lots of fish and coral, turtles and a manta ray. After lunch went for another swim of 1.3km making up the 5k total for the day. The boat then moved to a quiet location for the night that had a fabulous sunset.

Monday 10th: Tatawa - Pink Beach(swim) Karang Makassar(snorkel) Padar(swim)
Had the biggest swim ever (might be saying this every day) at 4km with two channel crossings. One of the crossings had a strong current and it took some skill and careful planning by the guides to get us across. Very thrilling swim. I had a queesy stomach so opted out of the midday snorkel. Jenny thought it was specsational!!! Sooooooooo lucky.  Afternoon swim at about 1.5km. Each swim so far has been a viewing spectacle above and below the water with lots of colourful fish and corals below and a Jurrasic style landscape above.

Tuesday 11th: Siaba - Cauldron "Shot Gun"(swim) Golden Passage(snorkel) Shotgun(swim)
The morning swim went down the edge of two small islands. We went between the two islands in a passage called 'The Shotgun' because the current runs really fast through it. Went for a snorkel at midday in the 'Golden Passage' and came back through 'The Shotgun' in the afternoon swim but in reverse as the tides/current had changed. We then took a hike to the top of a small hill on Komodao island for a fantastic sunset.

Wednesday 12th:
Another two swim day but Jenny and I had a break from snorkeling. Spent the time lazing about on the top deck reading and snoozing.

Thursday 13th: Rinja(dragons)  Karang Makassar(swim)
Today we had an early breakfast and went off the boat to see the Komodo dragons. A swims and a snorkel then off to watch the bat colony come out for the nightly hunt during sunset.

Friday 14th: Kelor(swim)
Last swim around the island of Kolor about 2kms. We then headed back to Labuan Bajo, packed our bags and got off the boat about 12pm. We were taken to a nice cafe for lunch and then to the airport for a 4pm flight. Arrived Denpasar paid $8 at the Novotel to use the showers etc. Had a leisurely dinner and boarded the red eye at 11:30pm for Sydney.

Jenny loved the snorkeling
